This weekend I have had the honor of being a tablescape designer (that's a fancy way of describing table décor) for the local Housewalk for my village of Western Springs, Illinois benefitting our historical society. Some people cringe at these events, but others of us wait for these like Christmas mornings! I have always enjoyed the tour of homes I have worked on because it is not only an occasion that utilizes my creative talent, but also the opportunity to serve my community, both of which I am passionate about.

Housewalks are a fundraiser in which neighbors open their homes to the public for touring to raise money for a local cause. Many towns and villages host these and are typically at winter holiday periods or in the spring, so hopefully you will grab some friends and get out their for some wonderful causes.

How do you get the most from your tour?

Keep an open mind-

Go with an open mind first of all. I am always looking for any creative inspiration whether it is in colors, gardens, materials, textures, you name it. Keep your mind open to all homes because even if they aren't your particular decorating style, you can still find a favorite paint color or interesting way to store kids toys for example.

Discover functionality-

I go to see what's important in how my neighbors like to live in their homes, because a well designed room is always functional.

Be prepared-

Take a small tote to grab any pieces of information, a bottle of water, and my phone for notes (no photography please). Pay attention and jot down notes, because the houses can often run together and you find an hour afterwards, you can't remember your favorites.

Comfort counts-

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes because you may want to take advantage of a lovely day and walk or perhaps lines may be long to ente

Check back with me to see more photos of my tables and favorites from this year's walk in Western Springs.

Colorado Calling - my design reflects the homeowners love of the state and nods to their profession as homebuilders. The birch placemats remind guests of their talent as luxury builders and the Colorado photography offers guests a nice favor of a professional piece of American beauty to take.

Jill, loved working with you. Your ideas are great and you are so helpful to those of us who are "design challenged". Can't wait to see your work in WS!
